To Save Grandma - FIGHT!
Yeshavi relates a heart-breaking story of saving her grandma...
Busy, busy, busy and a furious knock on the door!
On a busy shiny day, my day was as usual packed with tight schedule at work. A family member suddenly knocked at my door furiously. When I stepped out of my room with curiosity, I was informed that my grandmother back in our hometown is unwell and pretty much almost in the death bed.
I don’t visit hometown usually due to unpleasant family dramas. But my instinct told me that there is a strong reason for me to visit my grandmother this time. So I decided to go.
Immediately I called for a cab to visit my grand mother. Before leaving from home, I told my family members that I have a strong feeling that she will be back healthy.
We reached hometown in the midnight and I met my grandmother. She is now 96yrs old and relatives believed that she had lost all her memory. The moment my grandmother looked at me she first smiled at me and then she lifted her hand to hold my hand. Infact, she held my hand pretty tight. In few seconds, she called out my full name loudly and all my family members were in deep shock.
Counting The Hours for Death to Arrive.
My relatives forced me to believe that she is counting her time and she might die any moment now. Also tried to convince me that a doctor had checked and had given the same confirmation. I kept insisting that we need to get her admitted in a hospital as she has NOT lost her consciousness yet and still breathing, but they refused to give any importance to my words. Almost for next 12 hours, my relatives kept calling all the other family members to visit my grand mother for one last time before she takes her last breathe.
But it was ridiculous that group of people standing around her and repeatedly saying loudly that she is going to die anytime now!! As I felt that it can impact her mentally and she can lose hopes within her self.
Hungry Kya? Even a Criminal on Death Row Deserves A Last Meal.
My grandmother suddenly looked at me and I asked her “are you hungry?” and she nodded her head saying “yes” as she was not given any thing to eat from past 48hrs blindly thinking(probably even hoping) she will die soon.
I was trying to convince my relatives to take a second opinion from a different doctor. But they were trying to threaten me and everyone around saying that she could be killed with wrong diagnosis. So I was in a helpless situation wondering how to convince these fellows.
A Miracle with a Med Degree Arrives.
Suddenly from no where, a girl entered the house smiling at me and she said she wants to check my grandmother as she is a doctor. Apparently, she is one of the doctors who lived in that locality and she overheard about my grandmother ‘s situation randomly from someone and she walked into our house with no prior invitation.
It was a real magic!! She checked my grandmother and told me that there is no life threat. And she insisted me to get a medical kit to perform few checks at home with no delay.
Sometimes You've Got to Fight Off Vultures!
Even after that, my relatives were forcing me to not get any medical kit and still trying to convince everyone including doctor that she is going to die now. I strongly conveyed that I am going to save her life right now and I don’t need their support or consent anymore. Immediately I ran to get her all the medicines that doctor recommended. After coming back, doctor started treatment and I stayed overnight next to my grandmother to ensure that she is back to normal when no one believed me.
In the midnight, my grand mother held my hand and tried to get up from the bed and she placed her palms on my face and called out my full name couple of times. And she gave me a high five!!!! This moment was such a relief for me. As she made every one at home realize that she was out of danger now.
Sunrise brings Life Renewed!
After sunrise, she asked me to make her sit on the chair in the balcony to get some sun rays touching her skin and enjoyed the feel of come back moment. She is now completely fine with God’s grace!!
I made my relatives call all the family members whom they had invited earlier to visit my grand mother one last time, to inform that my grandmother is fit n fine now, and she is back to normal.
As a token of love, I gifted that doctor with few little things that I could afford for saving my grand mother's life and mainly to help me with a strong reason to convince these people around to proceed with the treatment for my grandmother.
I returned back home with full satisfaction, especially looking at my grandmother waving her hands wishing me safe journey.
I am grateful for this miraculous and meaningful trip gifted by god!!

1. Taking Care of The Elderly is not Easy. It can be hard, they can be unreasonable.But they can also be incredible gifts of joy. Ropes that bind a fraying world.
2. Purpose & Memory. In one person's case who was looking as if he wouldn't cross 75 came to us. Healing was significant, but what was the life-saver, was getting him to recall his many achievements, to take up a new hobby like photography. He passed away at 88.
3. Different attitudes to death. Recently, a brilliant student of ours, had brought her mom home. Her sister who was taking care of her, had suggested the mom do, what is noble in their society, stop eating, and welcome death.

There is the current Western idea of 'Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
There is the Spartan abandon the old on a mountain top.
There is the American Indian embrace of the elder spirit.
There are numerous Indian ways. From respectful, to predatory. Reverent, and a reverent way of walking to death fearlessly choosing death through noble starving.Celia's Uncle when he was 89 headed a 5 nation conference including India, China. At 80 he used to drive down mountain roads and ghats at speeds of 75-80. At 95 he recalls with clarity times he worked out deals with Henry Kissinger! That is one example. Another relative lived a year with a broken hip... There are many experiences of old age...
4. Spirituality is about living with spirit. Many today think they are on the spiritual path because they meditate, some actually believe meditating for an hour is all-important. It is great if it clarifies, empowers, transforms, liberates... ridiculous if it is sticking your head under a blanket.
